Fête de la Musique: when all of France starts to sing

Every year on June 21st, France welcomes summer in a very special way… with music everywhere. On that evening, streets, squares, parks and city centres turn into open-air stages where professional musicians, amateurs, choirs, students and neighbourhood bands all perform side by side.

This event is called the Fête de la Musique, and it has become one of the most joyful and iconic traditions of French life. For young people discovering France through a cultural and language exchange, it is also a wonderful way to experience the country in a lively, authentic and unforgettable way.

🎶 A celebration born in France

The Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture with a simple but powerful idea: to make music accessible to everyone and encourage people to play in public spaces. Since then, it has become a major annual event, not only in France but also in many other countries inspired by the concept.

What makes this celebration so unique is its openness. There is no single stage, no single style and no strict programme to follow. In one street, you may hear jazz. Next, a rock band. A little further on, perhaps a violin quartet, a DJ set or children singing with their school. For one evening, music belongs to everyone… and the whole city becomes a place of discovery !

🇫🇷 A very French way of living summer

The Fête de la Musique is much more than a musical event. It is also a perfect example of the French love for public life, summer evenings and shared moments outdoors. Families go for a walk after dinner, friends meet in town centres, cafés fill up, and people of all ages stop to listen, dance, smile or simply enjoy the atmosphere !

There is something very spontaneous and warm about this evening. You do not need to buy a ticket or prepare anything in advance. You just step outside and let yourself be surprised. That is why so many people love it: it feels simple, festive and open. In a country where culture is often lived collectively, the Fête de la Musique is one of those moments when everyday life suddenly becomes memorable !

✨ More than music… shared memories

What remains after a cultural exchange is not only the language progress, but also the memories built along the way. The Fête de la Musique creates exactly that kind of memory: a summer evening, a lively crowd, unexpected performances, laughter in the street, and the feeling of being part of something joyful and collective !

These moments are precious because they combine discovery, emotion and connection. They help transform a stay into a real human experience. They also show that intercultural exchange is not only about differences, but also about everything people can enjoy together — a song, an atmosphere, a shared walk through a lively town.

🌍 A perfect evening for a cultural exchange

For a young person staying with a host family in France, this celebration can quickly become one of the highlights of the summer. Walking through the town with a host family, discovering local artists, reacting to the music, comparing tastes and sharing impressions creates a natural setting for exchange.

It is also a very easy moment to communicate, even for someone who is still gaining confidence in the language. Music helps break the ice. Conversations start more easily, while reactions come naturally. And without even realising it, people practise listening, speaking and interacting in a real-life context. These are often the moments that make a stay feel less like “learning” and more like truly living another culture !

💛 An unforgettable way to discover France

The Fête de la Musique is colourful, vibrant and full of energy… but it is also deeply human. It reflects a country that loves culture, local life and moments of togetherness. For young people coming to France, it offers a beautiful first-hand experience of all of that.

At Kinder Exchange, we believe that these shared cultural moments are at the heart of what makes an exchange so meaningful. Discovering a country is not only about seeing places — it is also about living its rhythms, its traditions and its atmosphere. And on June 21st, France does not just celebrate music… it invites everyone to join in !
